THE ART STATION / YAIS

I spent one month in residence at The Art Station, in partnership with Young Artists in Suffolk, alongside four other visual artists and a poet, exploring the theme of environment. I developed ideas from my First Light commission 'Haven', exploring the intersection between horticulture and art, the politics of gardening and collaborating with living plant matter when producing work.

Group crits, mentoring sessions with Jevan Watkins-Jones and studio visits with Graham Crowley made the month an invigorating, exciting period of idea discussion and transformation. Focusing on The Art Station's community garden, I spent time with this natural space through collecting conker shells, creating new systems from pruned ivy stems, scattering bulbs, taking cuttings, casting long grass in plaster, drawing cardoons on wallpaper, stewing rose-hips, writing about weeding and casting squashed conkers, ivy and horse chestnut twigs in bronze.

I became interested in how we can create with and alongside plants in a more empathetic, collaborative way, and how I could work with gardeners and environmentalists in a research-led approach to explore such an impact on biodiversity.
